Joe Vine was a top order right-hand batsman and leg-break bowler who played 506 matches between 1896 and 1922, and also two Test Matches for England in 1911-12 against Australia.

He scored 24,120 runs including 33 centuries average 30.57 and took 621 wickets at 28.43 runs each including 5 wickets in an innings 25 times and 10 wickets in a match three times. His best bowling performance was in 1901 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge when he took 8 for 76 and 7 for 85.

He scored 1,000 runs in a season 14 times and was the first Sussex player to achieve the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in a season, which he did in 1901. He played in 421 consecutive matches for Sussex and after missing one match took part in a further 82 consecutive matches.

He became one of the few Sussex players to score 100 runs and take 10 wickets in the same match, when in 1906, he did so against Oxford University at Eastbourne.
