An exceptionally swift inside-forward, Albert was the Aston Villa 150 yard sprint champion of 1902, he played his early football in Birmingham junior circles with Ashbury Richmond (Handsworth & District League champions 1900-01) and Soho Caledonians (Small Heath & District champions 1901-02) before joining Villa as professional in August 1902. Three months later he made his First Division debut in a 4-2 defeat of Bolton Wanderers at Villa Park, but, with so many great players on the staff, it proved to be his only outing in the first team.
Albert enjoyed by far the most successful part of his career following his transfer to Bristol City in August 1903, where he partnered another future Albion player, Dick Wombwell, on the left flank and scored 21 goals in 50 Second Division matches but his sojourn at Ashton Gate lasted only two seasons and he was released in May 1905 to be quickly snapped up by the Albion management.
Unfortunately, the 24 year-old’s subsequent career then took a downward trend. He failed to reproduce his Bristol City form at the Goldstone and was as deputy for Proctor Hall during his only season on the South Coast. A move to Manchester City followed in June 1906, but again he failed to make an impact, appearing in just five First Division matches.
City released Albert at the end of the 1906-07 season, but he was soon recruited by the newly formed Bradford (Park Avenue) club and played in the Yorkshire side’s first-ever match which, somewhat strangely, was in the Southern League. He was not a success, though, and moved on to Coventry City during the summer of 1908 on their election to the Southern league. After an equally modest season at Highfield Road, Albert joined Merthyr Town and was subsequently installed as player-manager leading the Welsh club to the Southern League Division Two title in 1912.
A year later he took over as manager of Notts County and led the ‘Magpies’ twice to the Second Division championship before leaving the post in 1927.
Albert played 20 matches for the Seagulls scoring 8 goals.
