“Jack” Holmes was a right-hand batsman who played 203 matches between 1922 and 1939.

He scored 6,110 runs including 6 centuries at an average 21.22 and reached 1,000 runs in a season in 1923 and again in 1937. His top score of 133 not out came against Nottinghamshire at Hove in 1938. He captained Sussex from 1936 to 1939 and was Chairman of the England selectors from 1946 to 1949.

His appearances in first-class cricket were restricted by his service in the Royal Air Force from 1925 to 1935. During the second world war he was awarded the A.F.C. and bar.
