“Bertie” Chaplin was a right-hand batsman who played 169 matches between 1905 and 1914.

He scored 6,230 runs average 24.43 including 6 centuries and 1,000 runs in a season four times. His highest score and only double century was 213 not out against Nottinghamshire at Hove in 1914 and in the same season he hit 1,158 runs average 33.08, his best year.

He captained Sussex from 1910 to 1914. He was the club coach in 1946 and 1947.
