With 208 goals in all competitions for Tottenham to his name, Bobby Smith arrived at the Goldstone largely through the efforts of local bookmaker George Gunn. With Albion at a low ebb, the presence of former England man brought back the missing crowds and team responded by surging to the Fourth Division championship. Although Bobby missed fifteen matches through injury, Bobby hit nineteen goals and led the line in excellent fashion with his traditional style. He was, though, also blessed with a deftness of touch which could release his fellow forwards and no fewer than five other players also reached double figures thanks largely to his promptings.

In July 1965, however, he reported for pre-season training weighing over 15 stone and was suspended for two weeks by manager Archie Macaulay for being unfit. A massively-built man at the best of times, he lost weight and returned to the team for a League Cup replay with Luton Town on 7 September, scoring in a 2-0 victory, but it was his last appearance for the club.

Bobby played 34 matches for the Seagulls scoring 21 goals.
