Charles Smith

Charles Smith was a right-hand batsman and right-arm medium fast bowler who played 218 matches between 1898 and 1911. He first played for Sussex whilst Captain of Brighton College.

He scored 5,788 runs including 2 centuries at an average of 19.55 and took 9 wickets for 585 runs. In 1902 against Kent at Hove he shared in an unbroken partnership of 229 runs with George Brann for the eighth wicket which is still a Sussex record.

He captained Sussex in 1906 when C.B. Fry was injured and in his own right in 1909 when the team finished fourth in the championship.
