Freddie Smart

Having become the first captain of the reformed Southwick club at the age of nineteen in 1906, Freddie Smart served the ‘Little Wickers’ for many years and was a member of the excellent team which carried off both the West Sussex League championship and the Royal Irish Rifles Charity Cup in 1909 and 1911, as well as the Sussex Senior Cup in the latter year.

He first appeared in Albion’s reserve team in December 1909 and assisted the club until 1915. A speedy winger, at home on either flank, Freddie won a regular spot on the left wing in the Southern League side early in 1912-13, but made way for Fred Goodwin in November. He also represented Sussex on numerous occasions.
