George Brann was a hard hitting righthand batsman who later became more of a defensive batsman. He was also an occasional right-arm fast bowler who took 67 wickets at 44.22 runs each.

He played 271 matches between 1883 and 1905, scoring 10,858 runs including 24 centuries at an average of 26.55. He also scored 1,000 runs in a season on two occasions. In 1892 he achieved the rare distinction at the time of scoring two centuries in one match, 105 and 101 against Kent at Hove.

He toured Australia in 1887-88, South Africa in 1891-92 and North America in 1899. He still shares with C.L.A. Smith the record eighth wicket partnership for Sussex of 229 runs unbroken, achieved against Kent at Hove in 1902.

An excellent soccer player, he was capped for England in 1886 and 1891.
