Chapel, Lanarkshire born centre half Paul Mooney started his football career with Vernon Athletic in 1920 before starting his senior career with Falkirk in 1921, having spells with Aberdeen in 1922, Clyde in 1923 and East Stirlingshire in 1924 before heading south to join Third Division (South) Brighton & Hove Albion, making his Football League debut against Queen’s Park Rangers in October 1925. From the 1926-27 season he had made the centre half position his own, as Brighton went close to promotion for several years without ever achieving the leap. He was a member of the Brighton team that set a club record 16 game unbeaten run between October 1930 and January 1931, a record that stood for some 85 years until broken by Chris Hughton’s Brighton side of 2015.
